Once your server has become blacklisted it can take hours, even days, to be removed from the list.
When your server is blacklisted, it can delay or prohibit any outgoing email from reaching its intended recipient.
Server blacklisting is a result of networks that have rogue hosts which are compromising user accounts to send out mass spam messages. These accounts have been compromised due to weak passwords and/or virus infected PCs. When compromised accounts send spam to other ISPs, the likeliness of being blacklisted greatly increases.
You can avoid server blacklisting by following best practices for email usage.
- Be sure that all email passwords are a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters as well as numbers.
- Choose a password that is at least 8 characters long.
- Your password should not be a dictionary word or match your username.
- Email accounts should not be shared with other individuals and passwords should always remain secret.
- You will never be emailed asking for your credentials that may include username, password or other more personal details such as banking information. In the event that you have given out your username and password, immediately call your Email Technical Support organization for assistance.
- In the event that your account has been locked out for outbound spam violations, choose a new password and discontinue the use of your former password permanently for this account.
- Do not send more than 50 emails per 30 minutes to avoid being categorized as a “spammer.”
Furthermore, it is imperative that all email users on your network follow these guidelines to protect themselves and to ensure that the email solution does not become blacklisted.
